This is the show you have been waiting for, the Big Bug Show. We tackle parasites and pests within your flock. Matt, who used to be an exterminator, explains that identifying the pest is crucial for any kind of remedy.
There are 5 common mites, for example, and each have their own life cycle. This is important to know to treat your flock because you must break the life cycle.
There are different types of lice, and then there's also mice, rats, and even snakes.
The take away is that prevention is the key.
Make sure your flock has access to dust baths because that's how they will keep most biting parasites at bay. Don't let mice, rats, or snakes a reason to come to your coop. Maintain a healthy flock by not overcrowding your coop, a good chicken to coop ratio is important for a less stressful environment.
Plus we answer viewer questions.

Coming to you live from Creedmoor, NC is Video Chicken Live where we discuss and answer your questions about everything chickens and coops. Ask any question you want and Matt, Kristen and Ingrid will answer for you. We specialize in chickens and chicken coop construction.
Today we are discussing hemp bedding. We are often asked how many bales should people use? As we tried to figure out the best way to explain it, we stumbled on a competitors hemp, which claims to cover 11 cubic feet.
We tested our hemp which came to 5 cubic feet.
So we put 3 bales to the test. Two from a competitor and our bales. All say they are 33 lbs. The size of the bale in plastic was different, the color was different, but they all measured the same, 5 cubic feet.

Today we speak with Jeff & Paul who run a Carolina Coops owners forum on Facebook. Jeff started the group while waiting for his coop years ago. The Carolina Coops' team discovered the page recently and wanted to express our thanks. The forum is designed for people to show off what they did with their coop, paint or stain, coop scaping, etc, and also to help each other about questions concerning construction, chicken keeping, and predators.
We show the short documentary from Unconditional Freedom about the restorative justice program at the Mendocino County Jail where Matt helped the inmates build an 8'x24' American Coop that we donated to the program. You can view the documentary here:
Matt also shows the merchandise we are selling and of course, we answer viewer questions about chicken keeping and coop building.

Today's guest is Mendocino County Sheriff Matt Kendall. The sheriff along with the nonprofit group Unconditional Freedom instituted a restorative program at the jail for the inmates. The program involves gardening, bee keeping, and chicken keeping.
Carolina Coops donated an 8'x24' American Coop that Matt helped the inmates build. Sheriff Kendall talks about how building the chicken coop impacted the inmates and how the coop will continue to help other inmates down the road.
The sheriff is a big fan of Matt's and Carolina Coops and tells the audience what it was like to work with Matt on this project. He is a chicken keeper himself and modeled his coop build after a Carolina Coop. The sheriff also talks about the impact on other parts of the close knit community.
We hope this program will be an inspiration to other institutions who will see its benefit. Carolina Coops was very honored to be a part of this experience and program with the Mendocino County Jail and Unconditional Freedom, who filmed a documentary on this program.

Today Matt is live at the Mendocino County Jail where he spent the week helping inmates to build a donated 8'x24' American Coop.
The Unconditional Freedom Project contacted Carolina Coops a few months back asking us to be a part of the restorative justice program at the jail.
Mendocino County Sheriff Matt Kendall was instrumental in getting this program to the jail. He is a fan and fellow chicken keeper. Through the program, inmates will learn about gardening, growing food, chicken keeping, and now building a chicken coop.
Matt speaks with Marissa Ward, program manager from the nonprofit and Kate Feigin, who is a restorative justice program manager at the county jail.
The Unconditional Freedom Project is a nonprofit that aims to restore dignity to the most outcast members of society. They focus on the incarcerated, the homeless and the addicted. We were honored to be a part of this inspiration program. The nonprofit is making a documentary about this experience at the jail.

Then the real fun begins. We make Matt taste various things that are extremely nutritious and foreign to Matt.
Kristen brings in pemmican for Matt to taste. Matt also samples different edible greens from Ingrid's garden, such as dandelion greens, tatsoi, and nasturtium. Matt's a trooper, but clearly not loving most of the delicious goodies.
And we take viewer questions.

Coming to you live from Creedmoor, NC is Video Chicken Live where we discuss and answer your questions about everything chickens and coops. Ask any question you want and Matt, Kristen and Ingrid will answer for you. We specialize in chickens and chicken coop construction.
This week's discussion is on homesteading and sustainability. Many people are calling to order chicken coops because they realize that now is the best time to have chickens.
With store shelves repeatedly empty, supply chain issues, inflation, and diesel gas prices, many have discovered it's best to grow your own food, have access to fresh eggs, and live a more sustainable lifestyle.
Matt, Kristen, and Ingrid discuss water glassing eggs to preserve them for over a year, growing food on your property, preserving seeds, preserving your harvests, and doing all you can to be more sustainable.
Plus Matt unboxes his gift that was sent anonymously from a customer and reads the letter to him.
And we answer viewer questions.
