This week we have Mathias Engelmann, a biologist and Senior Rehabilitation Coordinator from the Carolina Raptor Center to discuss various aerial predators to our chickens. Mathias discusses the behaviors of hawks, owls, and falcons so we can learn different ways we can keep our flock safe.
For example, when is hawk and owl pressure the highest? Is an eagle a threat to your flock? Does having a fake owl or fake crows scare away hawks? And so much more.

Laurence also gives our audience tips on what to look for in the feed you buy, why non-GMO may or may not matter, and how important shelf life is to the integrity of your chicken feed. Coker Feed Mill develops feed for many types of livestock such as horses, cows, and goats.

We want to address the extreme heat that most of the world is experiencing right now and how it affects your chickens.
Chickens do much better in cold than the extreme heat. But there are things you can do to help your flock be more comfortable and stay safe in the rising temps.
Some quick tips are give them access to fresh, cool, water and shade. Lots of ventilation in the henhouse, plus other tips on what to feed them and how to keep them cool.
Plus we have so many more questions to answer and will do that and take your questions live.

Falyn Owens, Extension Wildlife Biologist of the NC Wildlife Resources Commission, is back talking about how wildlife interacts with backyard chickens.
With so much human encroachment on wild spaces, encounters with wildlife for people in urban and suburban areas are becoming more commonplace.
Falyn address those concerns, what we can do and what kind of threats, whether physical or through disease, wildlife can pose to our chickens and ducks.
Falyn discusses raccoons, opposums, snakes, owls, hawks, coyotes, and foxes. Plus she talk about how song birds can spread disease to your flock and visa versa.

We have been getting so many questions about mites and chickens that we did a show to help answer your questions on mites specifically.
We talk about the different types of mites, ie. roost mites, feather mites, and scaly leg mites and how the treatment for each is different.
Matt, a former exterminator, shows how to identify the specific mite, and how best to treat it. We compare food-safe diatomaceous earth and Elector PSP premise spray.
We answer your questions live on all things chickens and coops. Matt also shows some samples of new nesting material we are looking to try out.
We hope to do some research and see if we can bring this product to our Flock Shop.
