Falyn Owens, Extension Wildlife Biologist of the NC Wildlife Resources Commission, is back talking about how wildlife interacts with backyard chickens.
With so much human encroachment on wild spaces, encounters with wildlife for people in urban and suburban areas are becoming more commonplace.
Falyn address those concerns, what we can do and what kind of threats, whether physical or through disease, wildlife can pose to our chickens and ducks.
Falyn discusses raccoons, opposums, snakes, owls, hawks, coyotes, and foxes. Plus she talk about how song birds can spread disease to your flock and visa versa.

We have been getting so many questions about mites and chickens that we did a show to help answer your questions on mites specifically.
We talk about the different types of mites, ie. roost mites, feather mites, and scaly leg mites and how the treatment for each is different.
Matt, a former exterminator, shows how to identify the specific mite, and how best to treat it. We compare food-safe diatomaceous earth and Elector PSP premise spray.
We answer your questions live on all things chickens and coops. Matt also shows some samples of new nesting material we are looking to try out.
We hope to do some research and see if we can bring this product to our Flock Shop.

This week we speak to cousins, Sean and Patrick, founders of Grubbly Farms. The guys tell us how they went from growing black soldier fly larva in their laundry room in college to a full fledged sustainable chicken feed, treat, and dog treat business.
Grubbly Farms focuses on making food that is good for pets and the planet. The duo started with backyard chickens, creating golden grub-filled recipes with a fraction of the environmental footprint of traditional pet food. Sean and Patrick answer questions about where they source their BSF larva, and how they can continue to promote sustainable practices in the fast growing world of backyard chickens.

This week we show what are some essential items that a chicken keeper should have to deal with some basic first aid issues that arise with chickens. We will not be dispensing medical advice, yet we will let you know what things are good to have to on hand.
Also Kristen has the poop on chicken poop.
We very unscientifically test chicken poop with the Healthistraw, and two batches of hemp bedding. Kristen also brings a bantam hen and two bantam chicks.
Matt loses control of the show, gets bored, and gets grossed out.

NC State Poultry Vet Dr. Rocio Crespo is back again to answer all our questions about ducks, chickens, baby chicks, chicken health, and more!
Dr. Crespo has over 20 years’ experience as a poultry veterinarian. In addition to her work as a professor at NC State University, she heads the Poultry Mobile Veterinary Services at the NC State Veterinary Hospital that brings affordable vet care to poultry farms and backyard hobbyists alike.
Matt gets his answer on whether ducks need a body of water or just need to dip their heads. Dr. Crespo answers your questions about bumble foot, treats for chickens, battling pests, and more.
